TEDxStHilda'sSchool - Tori Bailey - Creative Music Journey
[Music] good morning ladies and gentlemen and students my name is Tory Bailey for those of you who don't know me I'm very passionate about music and the dramatic arts I write my own songs play instruments I'm involved in film work and I would love to have a career in the in the entertainment industry someday so I was asked to speak at the tedex conference about my musical journey and how that's helped me with the film work I done well to be honest at first I was very hesitant you see I'm the type of person who cares greatly what other people think and that's something I have to deal with a lot with the work I do so I just want to say from the start I'm not here here to talk about my achievements and how I've got there I just want to say that in stepping out of your comfort zone and taking a risk whilst it may be scary you might encounter some of the best experiences of your life as I'm only at the beginning of my journey in the Arts I cannot say what the recipe for success is I can't tell you how to make it to Hollywood and get your star on the ground I can't tell you how to get your music signed with a big record company either I can only share my experiences so far and hope there is Insight you might take away from these next few minutes as a child I wasn't overly confident in fact I was quite the opposite public speaking was a nightmare and singing in front of people made me so nervous that I would cry I guess I thought people would judge me and would therefore form a negative opinion of me it took me a while to grow in confidence and be able to perform on stage I had to step out of my com comfort zone I learned I had to take some risks at first it was horribly scary um but every time it got that tiny bit easier it still does an example from my own experience was the school idol competition in 2008 I was new to S hilders I was in grade eight and at first I didn't want to audition again I was worried I would make a mistake and what my new friends would think at the last minute I battled up the confidence and sung a duet with my friend Paige through the next rounds of the competition I had to sing solo and as and as if that wasn't scary enough I then had to sing in front of a theater of TSS boys as I now look back on that time it was the best thing I've ever done it not only helped me grow and develop and Performing but it also opened other doors I started auditioning for musicals and I soon realized I loved them there was one particular particular Musical that opened an opportunity I'll never forget it was the TSS musical Little Shop of Horrors one day at rehearsal an old boy from TSS asked if anyone would be interested in auditioning for a short film so I naively put up my hand and I took a risk in doing something I've never done before however it paid off and I got the part and from that very first short film I discovered that this is something I really want to do from then on I kept auditioning and other fantastic opportunities came up like my role Mia on As the Bell Rings I'm not going to say I've made it because that would be far from the truth I've still got a long long way to go but let me just leave you with don't be shy to take a risk because you never know where it might lead to it's what I've done and it's what I'm going to continue to do thank you
