The art of real Djing | Max Rosenblum | TEDxYorkSchool

[Music] my passion for destruction began in the fifth grade when I heard my first electronic dance music song levels by Avicii the tracks high-energy catchy melody and cleverly placed sample from Etta James's something's got a hold on me resonated inside of me it is from that moment on that I've been infatuated with EDM although my brief initial musical education was from the piano and the trombone neither of those instruments ignited a true passion or love of music inside of me but through my experiences as a DJ for school dances spin classes and my weekly podcast I was able to read music and as a DJ I make songs fit together like a jigsaw puzzle I found the commonalities between musical themes such as song samples rhythmic patterns and similar keys perfecting the art of DJing allows me to seamlessly transition between songs without my audience realizing in today's society DJ's have a reputation of being people who simply stand behind a laptop and wave their hands in the air while in truth we are so much more than what meets the eye DJing is an artform all about taking risks sometimes the risks are attempting a transition you've never practiced or tailoring the music to what you think a crowd will like all while throwing in your own flair but with the rise of Technology it has become increasingly harder to tell a real DJ from a fake one how you may ask well I'll tell you it's peace of two things first thing our pre-recorded sets made in music production software like this one shown here the second thing is this button the sync button which I'll out beginner DJs to mix without learning the basic skill of beat matching is these two things that lead society into thinking DJ's do nothing but wave their hands in the air because the DJ's that are utilizing these tools aren't really doing anything their work has only contributed to their success but diluted the art of real DJing I will leave you with this quote by Lee so real DJing is when a set of virtual reality you're experiencing the DJ in real life it's not a it's not a simulation like a film Total Recall or The Matrix it's when you actually take the red pill or the blue pill when I DJ I keep it real and hopefully impact everyone on some sort of level since becoming a DJ I've also started my own business called max your music services being an entrepreneur has taught me some important lessons like how to market myself how to stay relevant and how to generate profit I have learned to work with excellence in mind and never stop regardless of challenges just like for my audience DJing is a journey for me - a journey from playing private parties and weddings to clubs and festival main stages a boat and nothing until I achieve it just like in the lyrics of levels by vici the song that ignited my dream Oh sometimes I get a good feeling I have a good feeling that I can achieve my goal of becoming a world fit and with that let's mix it up [Applause] [Music] Oh [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause]
