Caleb: A feeling of happiness and contentment? B: Maybe you’ve gifted a coffee to a stranger. A: Or you’ve done something as small as C: picking at a pesky piece of licorice so a dog will not eat it. A: Whatever it may be, big or small, B: you all know this fuzzy feeling I’m talking about. A: Most will experience this after the completion of the smallest of deeds. C: But what if we were to tell that small deeds are rubbish? A, B, and C: We’re just kids, right? A: My name’s Anthony. C: My name is Caleb. B: And I’m Brendan. A, B, and C: Give away the Waste Warriors. B: In 2021, we completed a small deed. A: We picked up litter that we found gated across our local park. C: Now, Mom took photos of us and put them on social media A: to show others what was happening in our community. B: We definitely experienced that warm fuzzy feeling A: after receiving lots of positive feedback from our community. C: But there’s one small problem that seemed much larger, A: resulting in that warm fuzzy feeling dissolving into sadness. A, B, and C: You see, everywhere we went, B: to beaches, to parks, even the river, A: all had one widespread problem. C: A problem with litter, B: arranging from knots and peas to nappies and plastic in between. C: What about other children? I do not want them to get hit by pieces of glass. B: What about the animals? I do not want them to die. A: Disgusting with the critters. A, B, and C: We must clean up this mess. A: So we decided to continue our journey, A and C: forming the Waste Warriors, C: completing small days, one step at a time. B: But there’s no end in sight. C: Small deeds C and A: are rubbish. Teacher: Litter poses a danger to our environment - A: creating water, soil, and air pollution. B: According to Keep New Zealand Beautiful, C: 80% of the bridge found in the sea - B: started as litter from the land. A: This destroys our ecosystem and harms our marine wildlife. C: Litter also leaches toxins into the soil, A: resulting in poor ground conditions for plants. C: And they can also wash the chemicals B: into our waterways. A: And because many materials such as plastic C: will take hundred years to break down, A: this poses a great risk to global warming. B: It will be littering more than ever. A, B, and C: We will need to take immediate action. B: But how? C: We need to work together within our communities. A: Firstly, we need to rethink the items we purchase. B: These big companies - Do you really need those plastic cups in your dinner party? C: There are oxford general items A: that use cardboard packaging B: rather than plastic, for example - A, B, and C: Then we’re already making a difference. B: Repurpose items. T: How many times have you spotted litter in your community? B: Did you pick it up? C: Have a moment to look for the Waste Warriors. T: Please take a moment to look at the circle of control and influence. The inner circle represents things out of our control. So we should probably not spend much time worrying about such litter critters. If you look to the circle in the middle, this represents the things we may not have control over, but could influence the situation. C: This is the part where you can use influence. T: This is where you could have the most power. If you can adjust to have a growth mindset, you will already be in a better position to make those changes. If you look into that outer circle, this represents the things that we may not have any control or influence over. These are the types of people with a fixed mindset, and we usually make comments such as: “This is the council’s job.” A, B, and C: That will be like out there, jumping over the stronger floor, and saying “It’s your mom’s job. I think he’ll be brave enough.” (Laughter) T: We all have a role to play if we want to save our environment. Next time you spot litter in your community, take a moment, and reflect on the circle of control and influence. Decide for yourself where you would like to place yourself in the circle. Look through the lens of a waste warrior. And remember: A, B, and C: Reduce, reuse, and recycle. T: For us - B: for your children, A, B, and C: and future generations. Until then, small deeds will remain rubbish. T: Thank you. (Cheers) (Applause)
